Interview Alert: 9/21/09 – The Ultimate Employee Benefit!
September 16, 2009Financial stress impacts businesses in insidious ways that are not obvious at first glance. I’ve been reviewing the research into quantifying this impact. Astounding best describes my reaction to what researchers have been finding. For example, 80% of employees surveyed report stress related to financial pressures and concerns about the economy. Workplace productivity suffers up to 20 hours per week per person!
To make matters worse, the Department of Labor’s Financial Literacy working group has recommended holding employers responsible for their employees’ ability to adequately plan their financial affairs. The FED has concurred with this. With 401(k)’s becoming 101(k)’s, how long will it take for class actions lawsuits to start hitting employers to make up the gaps now existing in many retirement funds?
Fortunately, there are well documented solutions to financial literacy that correlate with employees improving their financial well-being without increasing their compensation. Returns on Investment have been as high as 9:1. Non-profit organizations are responding with no-cost programs, too.
